An Introduction to Drain Hydro Jetting

A clogged trap can allow material in your drain to back up and cause major problems. Drain hydro jetting is the process of sending a high-pressure water stream down your drain to clean it. If you're interested in finding out more about hydro jetting, this is the article for you. Read on to find out some of the reasons you may need to hydro jetted and the steps a contractor will take when completing the job.

Signs a drain needs to be hydro jetted

If you notice any of the following, it could indicate you need to have your drains hydro jetted.

  • Water backing up into your toilet or sink
  • Water saturated ground above a pipe
  • An unpleasant smell and/or discolouration in your drain
  • Slow drainage

Steps in a typical drain hydro jetting job:

  1. The first step is to remove the trap or U-shape pipe below a sink or a drain cover outside the building to access the blocked pipe.
  2. A camera is then inserted into the drain to locate any blockages in the line. The plumber should be able to watch live footage of the probe as it travels down through the drainage system. While looking for blockages, the plumber can also assess the condition of the interior of the pipes.
  3. If any blockages are found, they are removed by using a special drain jetting tool that is attached to a long pole. This jetting tool shoots high-pressure water out of several directional nozzles. Liquid particles are accelerated down the drain by this burst of water. When this water hits the blockage it breaks up the debris for easy removal. Most of the debris will be washed away, but the contractor will also use suction equipment to remove sections of debris. The stream of water can be powerful enough to clear any blockage in a matter of minutes.
  4. After a drain hydro jetting process, you should notice that water is draining as it should from your kitchen, bathroom and any other rooms which make use of the drainage system. The plumber will conduct a final check to make sure everything is in good order.
